This painting is the harmony of realism with painterly abstraction. The face was painted realistically. As you get to the mane, I let the colors loose. Taking a squeegee instead of a paintbrush, I picked up the colors I had left on the palette. I dragged them out of the lion to resemble radiance and movement. Lions are a powerful symbol of strength. This painting was on exhibit at the Lindsay Rapp Gallery's Lion and Angels art exhibit. To me, the lion has spiritual symbolism for God's power and omnipotence. He is the light in the darkness, his colors are incomprehensible.
